Hearing Loss: When you should start wearing hearing aids?

Hearing loss is a condition which can occur due to many reasons, since birth to old age. But, solution for every hearing problem is not hearing aids. You should be aware about correct time for hearing aid fitting, when this is the only solution/treatment left based on assessment.

CONGENITAL HEARING LOSS

If a child is born with hearing loss, his/her hearing loss should be confirmed from diagnostic audiological tests and should be fitted with hearing aid binaurally by 6 months of age for speech & language development.

LATE ONSET HEARING LOSS

In some conditions, child is born with normal hearing but hearing loss occurs with time. If child does not respond to sounds every time, speech & language not developing as per his/her age, clarity of speech is affected, and then child should be assessed for hearing loss. He/she should be fitted with hearing aids as soon as possible, once sensorineural hearing loss is confirmed.

OLD AGE HEARING LOSS

It is a common conception among people that hearing loss comes with age. When permanent sensorineural hearing loss is confirmed, should be fitted with hearing aids. But, Is it right time to start. You should start using Hearing Aids if following symptoms are seen;

  • Have difficulty in understanding others speech either in group/on telephone/on TV at least 50% of time.
  • Have hearing loss in both ears with >50% and have to be based on lip cues/facial expressions to understand.
  • When family members/others have to speak louder/repeat themselves to make you understand.

HEARING AID FITTING AT RIGHT TIME WILL SLOW DOWN AUDITORY DEPRIVATION AND WILL GIVE BETTER SPEECH UNDERSTANDING.
